What We Do
About 240Tutoring

240Tutoring is an online resource for teachers preparing for their certification exams. Founded in October 2010 with the goal of preparing Texas teachers for their certification exams, 240Tutoring expanded nationally in 2012 to help teachers across the United States.

In October 2010, 240Tutoring began creating study guides and assessments to help teachers pass their certification exams. We brought together veteran teachers from various backgrounds and with different expertise to analyze the Texas teacher certification exam requirements and create quality instructional content and practice questions to craft a study guide that would become the best resource available. Within months of launching our website, we were being recommended by programs and universities throughout Texas. Soon after, we began working directly with universities to help their students prepare for the exams. Our success reiterated the usefulness of our study guides and reinforced our desire to help teachers across the nation prepare and pass their exams. In February of 2012, we launched our national website to help teachers across the United States.

We prepare teachers for their certification exam in three ways:

Answering the “need to know” questions– Finding everything you need to know for the exam is stressful and time consuming, but very necessary. It’s hard for a test taker to find the answers to the three most important questions: What do I need to know on the exam? How do I find out what I don’t know? How do I improve my testing knowledge? Answering these three questions is imperative to be successful for any exam, especially teacher certification exams. 240Tutoring has done the research, developed the necessary curriculum, and implemented the best assessment methods so test takers can focus on what is most important—learning the material.

Providing the resources to learn the material– The goal of any test taker should be to learn the material and pass the exam. Passing any certification exam requires that a test taker know the material very well. The exams are designed to assess a person’s knowledge about a specific subject; there are no short cuts or special secrets anybody can employ to pass the exam. 240Tutoring study guides are designed to help test takers learn the material by equipping each study guide with in-depth instructional content and practice questions, in order that test takers may learn the material and practice useful implementation of their knowledge through our practice questions. Our method and resources are proven to work.

Quality testing tips and strategies– There are no testing secrets to pass an exam, but there are many testing strategies to best implement one’s content knowledge. Certification exam question structures are similar, and there are certain strategies to help students identify the best answer option. For example, each multiple choice question typically as two obviously incorrect answers, one partially incorrect answer, and the correct answer. By eliminating the two incorrect answers before answering the question, a person’s chance of success doubles. 240Tutoring offers the best, research-based testing tips to help test takers best implement their knowledge.

What is in a study guide?

Instructional Content– Our instructional content is designed by analyzing each certification exam and creating curriculum specific to the exam. Each aspect of the test is dissected, and curriculum is developed that addresses the specific knowledge needs of each area. The instructional content is an in-depth, comprehensive review of the subject knowledge tested.

Practice Questions– Our practice questions are detailed replications of exam questions. The structure, voice, and answer options are replicated as closely as possible so that our students can become familiar with how questions are asked and be able to identify what the question prompt is asking. Furthermore, practice questions help test takers implement their learning from the instructional content. Practice questions include explanations for the correct and incorrect answer options so students can fully understand why one answer option is correct and another is incorrect.

Assessments– Each study guide is divided into sections of similar content. Each section has an assessment feature that provides feedback about a test taker’s strengths and weaknesses. This allows individuals to begin studying at their weakest point and monitor their progress throughout their studying. Each assessment can be taken up to three times.

How to use the study guide

The goal for the users of 240Tutoring study guides is to learn the material and pass the exam. As you work through the study guides, it is very important to remember that the goal is to learn the material and pass the exam.

Common mindsets students fall into while studying is that they must have a certain assessment score, answer so many questions, or spend a certain amount of hours reading the instructional content. While all those things are important, none of them guarantee learning the material and passing the exam. Spending fifteen minutes reading a few pages of study material in a quiet place is better than spending three hours scanning all the study material in front of the TV. Carefully reading and thoroughly understanding ten questions is better than answering all the questions and glancing at the right answers. A high assessment score is great, but being able to recognize assessment answers does not mean that you know the material. When and how a student studies greatly affects how well they will learn the material. Finding a quiet location and a distraction-free time of day is paramount for proper preparation.

To best prepare for the exam, use the following guidelines while studying. Remember, the goal is to learn the material and pass the exam.
  1. Plan to spend 15–30 minutes a day studying for 6 days a week. Research shows individuals have higher rates of knowledge retention when studying in short, consistent sessions than studying in infrequent long sessions. It is better to study 20 minutes a day all week than 4 hours on Saturday morning. It is best to find a consistent time of day where you can have 15–30 minutes of quiet, distraction-free study time.
  2. Read and answer questions thoroughly. Our questions are very detailed and made to emulate questions found on the actual exam. The structure, voice, and answer options are replicated as closely as possible so our students can become familiar with how questions are asked and be able to identify what the question prompt is asking. Quickly clicking through questions will quickly lead to frustration. Also, assessment questions are embedded in the practice questions; the better a student understands the practice questions, the higher their assessment score will be.
  3. Read the “Overall Material” documents before studying. These are overviews of the exam and contain testing tips to help students succeed on the exam.

The 240Tutoring tutoring process was designed to help make studying easier for teachers. We have simplified how teachers interact with the study materials so they can spend more time studying and less time taking practice exams and flipping pages to check answers. Remember, studying can be a slow process, but being diligent and consistent in studying is the best way to learn the material and pass the exam.
